Northwest Catholic Students Named Summa Scholars
Posted 05/17/2017 08:52AM

Eight outstanding students from Northwest Catholic High School in West Hartford have been named “Summa Scholars” by Dr. Michael S. Griffin, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford. These eight seniors were recognized for their superior academic achievement.

To qualify for the award, which was given to 53 seniors from the eight Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Hartford, students had to be in the top 5% of their graduating class based on cumulative grade point average. The students were honored during a ceremony and reception at St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield on April 24, 2017.

Each Summa Scholar was invited to name a teacher from a Catholic elementary or secondary school who had been the most influential in the student’s education. These teachers were also honored during the ceremony and given a certificate or appreciation. Each student spoke about the influence his or her chosen teacher had on his or her academic life.

Dr. Griffin said, “It’s really wonderful to have this opportunity to recognize the extraordinary academic achievements of a group of young people who have devoted themselves to such exceptional pursuit of knowledge.” He continued, “It’s also wonderful to recognize some very special teachers — people who by your words and example have led and inspired and guided each of our young awardees along the way.”

The Summa Scholars received bronze medallions engraved with their names, the crest of the Archdiocese, and a prayer: "May you find truth through faith, knowledge, and wisdom.”
