When Northwest Catholic Student Council members learned that Field Day, the major spring event sponsored by the Student Government, would not be a reality this year, they considered how the funds raised for that and other student activities could be used to help our neighbors in need. Their thoughts immediately turned to Manna Meals, an outreach program of Hands On Hartford, in which many students have had direct volunteer experience. They wondered: How is COVID-19 impacting the Manna Meals program and how can we help? In an effort initiated by the executive board and approved by unanimous vote in a remote Microsoft Teams meeting, the Student Council pledged to donate $500 to Manna Meals.
In a letter to the Executive Director of Hands On Hartford, Student Council President Ben Lee wrote, “We believe that during these times of distress and drastic change, Manna Meals has provided a source of continuity for our Greater Hartford community. With national coverage of the pandemic and other affairs, we were concerned that the local community served by Manna Meals would be overshadowed and forgotten.” He went on to explain that for himself and the other councilors, “what sets Manna Meals apart is the personal attention given to each person and family in need. We believe helping those closest to us would be the best way to help.”
When COVID-19 shut down normal operations, the members of the NWC Student Council have stepped up. “I couldn’t be more proud of our executive board, the commissioners and the members of the NWC Student Council,” explains Lorraine DeCrescenzo, faculty advisor for the student government group. “We begin every meeting with a prayer written by our own members and that spirit of Christian service and mission informs everything we do. The idea of this donation was initiated entirely by the board members themselves, and it epitomizes the good work and spirit of these student leaders.”
The May meeting of the Student Council also bid farewell to the outgoing senior members of the Student Council, including President Ben Lee, Vice President Steven Liu, Treasurer Jonathan Heiden, Secretary Isabel Mortillaro, Community Service Commissioner Sarah Monarca, Student Activities Commissioner Gabriella Alexander, Spirit Commissioner Isabella Schuchardt, Public Affairs Commissioner Keagan Ostop, Carly Drusedum, Catherine Wilcox, Asha Patel, Paul Verner, and Alisa Yan.
