Mary Swetcky of Bloomfield has been an assistant in Northwest Catholic’s volleyball and softball programs since 2006. Yesterday it was revealed at the school that she is stepping into a new role. Swetcky will be the new head volleyball coach this fall.
Swetcky played volleyball for the University of Connecticut for four years and was captain for her last two. She has a bachelor’s degree in human development and family relations and her master’s in public affairs. She is currently the administrative assistant at Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield where she has worked for the past 25 years. Swetcky lives in Bloomfield with her husband, Joe, and has two grown children, both alumni of Northwest Catholic, Jessie, an attorney, and Christopher, a college professor.
On April 24, 2018 the NWC volleyball team gathered to receive the announcement of Swetcky’s appointment. Athletic Director Matthew Martorelli explained to the young women the process by which Coach Swetcky was selected and spoke of her many qualifications and accomplishments. Swetcky then addressed her players, stressing the importance of preparation and her priorities as a coach. Swetcky said, “We’re going to have fun. You know we’re going to have fun. But we’re also going to work really hard, and we’re going to be really, really good.” Before bringing the team together for a huddle, she left them with one immediate task and one she’s expecting this fall.Swetcky wants her players working out now for their next season, but what she wants more is them ready to return to school in August to welcome the new players. She reminded them that they were once freshmen too, and she wants her returning athletes to "welcome the new players into the family.”
After the meeting, when asked about her coaching philosophy, Swetcky answered: “I love volleyball, and I love working with these great young women. Together we learn more about life than just passing a ball. We learn about respect, family, how to work together towards a common goal, and how we journey to be the best we can be. Not always the best, but always our best. We strive to win, but winning is not the most important thing. What’s most important is how we play together and work together.”
Northwest Catholic is delighted to welcome Coach Swetcky as head volleyball coach and looks forward to reaching new heights this fall.
