Why Invest in Your Child's Future?

Because Northwest Catholic is a private, college preparatory school, we recognize that most our families are saving for their children’s college education. Despite these demands, our families understand how NWC is an investment in their child's future. Here are just a few reasons why:

Our graduates are accepted to competitive colleges and universities across the country.

In the past five years alone, NWC graduates have been accepted to Brown, Holy Cross, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, M.I.T., NYU, Harvard, Yale, and many more top tier schools. Read a longer list of our college acceptances since 2021 as well as our School Profile and Fast Facts for more evidence.

Our graduates receive merit aid at their colleges and universities.

Members of the Class of 2019 reported receiving over $5.9 million in scholarships and merit awards from the colleges they applied to, which is an average of $42,000 per student.

Our graduates are well prepared for the challenges of college and beyond.

A Northwest Catholic graduate aspires to be intellectually curious, spiritually aware, compassionate, community focused, whole people, developing in mind, body, spirit, and imagination. Again and again we hear how NWC prepared our graduates for their future.

Rev. John T. Shugrue Family Memorial Scholarship

APPLY NOW

The Reverend John T. Shugrue dedicated the last twenty-two years of his priesthood to serving the parish of the Church of St. Peter Claver in West Hartford, CT. As its first pastor, he led his parishioners in prayer and in increasing their love for God.

Particularly important to Father Shugrue were young people, those of St. Peter Claver and the hundreds of others he came to know and influence during the years he served at St. Joseph Cathedral School, St. Thomas Aquinas High School, and South Catholic High School.

Father Shugrue would have protested any memorial in his name, such was his humility. However, in 1988 parishioners of the Church of St. Peter Claver believed that a scholarship fund, which would assist young people in pursuing their Catholic education at Northwest Catholic High School, was a fitting tribute to this gentle man. It was their way of expressing their continuing affection for their former pastor and of acknowledging his love of children.

In 2006, the scholarship fund was increased with a bequest from the estate of Mary G. Shugrue, the sister of the Rev. Shugrue. She, too, dedicated herself to working for the Catholic Church. For years she served as secretary to Bishop Daniel Riley of the Norwich diocese. In 2011, gifts in memory of Rev. Shugrue’s brother, James F. Shugrue, were directed to the scholarship fund, as they were again in 2015 when another brother, Joseph N. Shugrue, passed away.  This is in keeping with the wishes of the Shugrue family that Rev. Shugrue and his deceased family members be remembered for the great value they placed on Catholic education.

These scholarships are awarded to two ninth-grade students on the basis of character, leadership qualities, academic ability, achievements, and financial need.

"Choosing NWC for our children has been one of the best and most important decisions our family has ever made. NWC made our children more aware of the people around them. Having a diverse ethnic and socioeconomic student population gave our children a better picture of life outside of our own town. Also participating in different service projects gave them good life skills and made them more compassionate people. Most important, they have been taught to listen and trust in God and to lean on him through life’s ups and downs. It is a gift that will last a lifetime."
